Last month, our Philadelphia A/C service gave you some smart tips to follow on a day-to-day basis in
order to slash your home cooling bills. But what about when you're away on a summer vacation with
the family? As you might expect, the best procedures for keeping your home cool without wasting
money and energy are a bit different when no one will be in the house for an extended period of time.
Here's what to do before leaving on a trip:
1. Adjust the temperature – When your family will be gone for a few days or weeks, you may be
tempted to turn your A/C off. However, doing so isn't a good idea in the summertime. Without
the A/C running occasionally, the house can easily get hot enough to harm wood floors,
appliances and plants. Plus, moisture may build up and lead to mold growth if the A/C isn't on
to keep the humidity in check. With this in mind, it's best to turn your thermostat up rather than
off when leaving in order to maintain your home. Our A/C service in Philadelphia suggests
setting the thermostat somewhere between 78 and 82.
2. Consider a programmable thermostat – If you want to have full control over the temperature
of your home even when you aren't there, a programmable thermostat is the perfect device. You
can easily set it to “vacation mode,” which will keep the temperature constant while you aren't
around. If you invest in a thermostat that can be controlled from a mobile device, you can even
turn the temperature down while on your way home so you'll be greeted by a cool house.
3. Don't forget the air filter – In order to keep your A/C system running efficiently, you
should inspect, change or clean the air filter once a month. If you know you'll be out of town for more than a month, consider replacing it early, or set a reminder to change it as soon as you get home.
4. Block out the sun – To make sure your A/C doesn't have to do unnecessary work while you're
away, be sure to close all of the blinds and curtains before departing. If you'd like to leave some
of the blinds open to make it look like someone is home and discourage burglars, try to choose
windows that don't get a lot of sunlight.
By following these simple steps, you'll keep your A/C system and home in good condition while you're off enjoying a vacation.
