4 Steps to Take Before Turning On Your A/C

Now that the days are getting warmer, you may be thinking of switching from heat to air conditioning in your home or business. Before doing so, our Philadelphia A/C service recommends taking a few minutes to prepare and inspect your system to ensure it is ready to cool your home effectively. Here’s what we suggest putting on your checklist:

  1. Take a trip to the air conditioning unit inside of your property and replace the filter. Make sure the filter is the right size so that no air can go through without being filtered. Taking this simple step and continuing to change the filter once a month throughout the spring and summer will go a long way toward preventing A/C issues.
  2. After a new filter is in place, go outside and find your outdoor air conditioning unit (also known as the condenser.) If you put a cover over it for the winter, be sure to remove it before firing up the A/C for the season.
  3. Next, you should get rid of any vegetation or stray objects that are within 18 inches of the condenser. For good measure, you may also want to spray off the coils with a hose to remove any debris that has collected over the fall and winter.
  4. Finally, you should check that the disconnect switch and/or breaker for the condenser are turned to the on position. You’ll find these switches on the side of the unit under a cover.

After completing these steps, you’ll be ready to turn on your A/C! Once you’ve done so, be sure to check out our post on common energy misconceptions so that you can learn how to run your system in an efficient and cost-effective manner all spring and summer long.
